Ingredient Notes
- Hass Avocados- Avocados are the staple in this recipe. Make sure to pick up some large Hass Avocados. You will know they are ripe when they will feel lightly soft but they will not feel “mushy” to the touch.
- Limes- Fresh limes are a must in this recipe. We will be using the juice and it will give the guacamole a brightness and a zing.
- Roma Tomatoes- Picking the right tomato is important. Roma tomatoes don't contain a ton of juice so they will not water down your guacamole. They also have a milder flavor compared to other tomato varieties.
- Red Onion- Red onions are the perfect onions to use raw in dishes. They have a milder flavor than white onions and go perfect in this guacamole.
See the recipe card for the full ingredient list and quantities.
Instructions
- Dice the red onion and the tomato
- Cut the avocados in half, removing the pits. Scoop the flesh into the bowl with the lime juice, and salt. Mash the avocado with a fork until a creamy dip forms, leaving some large avocado chunks for texture.
- Fold in the diced onions and tomatoes
- Serve immediately
Hint: For a creamier guacamole, chop the tomatoes and the onions very fine. For a chunkier guacamole, give the vegetables a bigger dice like I did.
Optional Add-Ins and Variations
- Jalapeños - Give the guacamole a little kick of spice and add a jalapeño or two!
- Green Onions - Swap the red onion for green onion for a milder, less sharp onion taste.
- Fresh Herbs - Add some fresh chopped cilantro to give more brightness and herbal flavor to the dish.
- Garlic powder: Garlic powder is an easy, pantry-ready way to add garlic flavor to the guacamole
- Jarred salsa: Don't have tomatoes on hand but have a jar of salsa? Add a tablespoon or two of fresh jarred salsa instead of the tomato!
- Ground cumin: Cumin will add warmth and depth to the dish.

It is a preference type of thing. I like to use red onion but others like the sharpness of white onion and others like the milder green onion.
No, avocado salsa has a lot of the same ingredients as guacamole but also contains tomatillos and is blended for a thinner texture.
Equipment
Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. See below for the equipment you will need to make this recipe.
- Mixing Bowl
- Chef Knife
- Cutting Board
Storage
Store leftover 4-ingredient guacamole in an airtight container or covered tightly with plastic wrap for 1-2 days.
I do not recommend freezing this guacamole as the onions and tomatoes will not retain their same texture and it will become quite watery.
How to Keep Guacamole from Turning Brown
Guacamole will turn brown very quickly as it is exposed to air and oxidizes. In order to keep your guacamole green, it is imperative to protect it from oxygen. Here are the best ways to keep your guacamole from turning brown:
- Store in Airtight Container- This is my preferred method of keeping guacamole from oxidizing. I fill up a glass meal prep container until full and then seal it with a lid. Making sure it is airtight is important as it does not allow oxygen in to turn it brown. Making sure it is airtight is important as it does not allow oxygen in to turn it brown.
- Cover the surface with lime juice. The lime will help keep the avocado from turning brown. This works ok but can change the flavor of your guacamole.
- Cover with plastic wrap, but press the plastic wrap against the surface of the guacamole, squeezing out as much air as possible. This works in a pinch if you don't have an airtight container to store it in, however I always prefer a container if you have it.
Top tips
- If you don’t have limes, you can use lemon juice in a pinch. It won't have the same flavor that lime juice brings but it will give the acidic bite that guacamole needs.
- If you prefer your guacamole on the creamier side, dice the tomatoes and onions finely. I prefer my guacamole chunkier so I keep them fairly large.
- Provide different dipping variations. I love to serve guac with chips but raw vegetables such as broccoli, celery, carrots and cherry tomatoes are also a great option for a more nutritious snack.
