This Chipotle Southwest Sauce is the ultimate flavor bomb. Use it as a sandwich spread or dollop it on tacos or quesadillas and you will be amazed!
I don't know about you, but I am a sucker for a good sauce. I feel like a good sauce, salsa or dip makes or breaks most meals. This chipotle southwest sauce definitely makes a meal. It is savory, spicy and smoky and takes just 5 minutes to make. It doesn't get much better.
We love to drizzle this sauce over tacos, quesadillas and even just over a bowl of rice to pump up the flavor. This sauce also makes a giant batch and stores well so you can use it on multiple meals. Go ahead, you won't regret it!

Why You'll Love This Chipotle Southwest Sauce
- Flavor Packed-This southwest sauce is full of bold, smoky flavor you will love with every bite.
- Creamy-The combination of greek yogurt with the mayonnaise makes this sauce extra creamy! I use dairy-free yogurt and mayonnaise to keep it plant-based.
- Customizable- This sauce is totally customizable, you can swap the mayonnaise for sour cream if that is your preference and you can adjust the heat by adding more or less chipotle peppers.
- Easy-This sauce comes together in just 5 minutes and requires very little effort. Whip this up for your next taco night and you won't regret it!
Ingredient Notes
- Mayonnaise- The vegan mayonnaise helps to add a creamy texture to the sauce. If you don't like the taste and flavor of mayonnaise or don't have it on hand, you can still get that tangy flavor from sour cream. Use vegan versions of each to keep it plant-based.
- Plain Greek Yogurt- The greek yogurt gives this sauce a tangy flavor and lightens it up. Make sure to use plain yogurt and not flavored. Use vegan versions to keep it plant-based.
- Taco Seasoning-Part of what makes this sauce super easy and low maintenance is by using taco seasoning instead of measuring out spices. I just buy one of the packages you find in the store's spice aisle of the store.
- Chipotle Peppers- Buy the canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. Keep in mind that the more you add the spicer your sauce will be.
Step By Step Instructions
Step One: Add all the sauce ingredients to a food processor and pulse until combined.
Step 2: Once the sauce is blended, pour it into a glass jar. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Variations
- Extra Spicy - add extra chipotle peppers to up the spice level
- Subway copycat chipotle southwest sauce - If you want to spread this on sandwiches like your favorite fast food sandwich shop, omit the taco seasoning and greek yogurt and use ranch dressing in its place.
- Sour Cream - If you try and stay away from mayonnaise, use sour cream in the same amounts instead!
Favorite Chipotle Southwest Sauce Pairings
This sauce seriously goes well with anything but some of my favorite pairings for this southwest sauce are:
- Taco Bell Spicy Potato Soft Tacos
- Roasted Veggie and Black Bean Tacos
- Vegan Fish Taco Bowl
- 30 Minute Egg Roll in a Bowl
Storage
Add the sauce to an airtight jar. I love using glass mason jars or clean spaghetti jars for this. Store in the fridge for up to three weeks.
I wouldn't freeze this sauce as the mayonnaise and yogurt could separate when thawing.
Top tips
- This recipe makes a lot of sauce. I like to put a couple of taco nights on the calendar to use up this sauce.
- If you don't have a food processor, feel free to make this in your blender. Sometimes when I don't feel like getting my food processor out, I make this in my Nutribullet.
- If your sauce is too thick for your liking, you can thin the sauce out by using 2-3 tablespoons of milk.
Recipe FAQ's
This chipotle southwest sauce is made of a mixture of greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lime juice, taco seasoning, and chipotle peppers.
It depends on the taco seasoning you use and how many chipotle peppers you add. I like to keep this sauce on the mild side by using mild taco seasoning and 3 chipotle peppers.
Subway's chipotle sauce is slightly different from this sauce and is ranch based. Instead of using greek yogurt, swap it for the same amount of ranch dressing and leave out the taco seasoning.
