One of my favorite easy desserts to share is always brownies. I love chocolate and I love how easy brownies are to make and be adapted. I don't even mind eating boxed brownies, those things are stinking good. However, nothing comes close to homemade brownies, all the good, and rich chocolate flavor, and the fudge texture, you really can't go wrong. I have been making these brownies for years and people always rave about them. People ask all the time what makes them so fudgy and so rich. Well, let me tell you, the reason they are over the top delicious is the addition of chocolate stout. That's right, beer. I bet you didn't see that one coming. Let's dive in.

What are Brownies?
To put it simply, brownies are just a square or rectangle chocolate confection. They come in a variety of forms depending on how you make them and the ingredients you use. Sometimes brownies can be just plain chocolate or they can include additional ingredients like nuts, cream cheese, frosting, or candy. There is no record for sure about the creation of brownies, however, there are many legends.
One prominent legend has it that the brownie was a creation of Bertha Palmer, a prominent Chicago Socialite. Palmer's husband owned the Palmer's House Hotel and in 1893, she asked the pastry chef to make a dessert suitable for ladies attending the Chicago World's Fair She requested a cake-like confection smaller than a piece of cake that could be included in boxed lunches. This resulted in the Palmer's House Brownie which contained nuts and an apricot glaze. Thus the idea of the brownie was formed. Brownies have since become an American staple and you can get them at almost every bakery nationwide and they are a fan favorite for the home cook to make.
The brownie recipe that I am sharing with you today is fudgy, boozy, and filled with chocolate. You won't want to miss out.
How to Make these Easy Boozy Brownies
These easy Boozy Brownies are simple and easy to make, they come together quickly and will have all your guests wondering what exactly is in them to give them the rich flavor and texture.
Preparation Time:
Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 45 Minutes
Total Time: 55 Minutes
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cup of flour
- ¾ cup of cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 4 flax eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- ½ pint of chocolate stout (I used Boatswain because it is vegan)
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 stick vegan butter
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee powder
Instructions
- Preheat your oven at 350 degrees and line a 9×13 glass pan with parchment paper
- In a medium-size bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, set aside
- In a separate bowl, combine the vegan butter and sugar and beat until nice and fluffy, add the flax eggs, vanilla, stout, and instant coffee powder. For the stout, I used Boatswain Chocolate Stout, it is sold at Trader Joe's and is Vegan.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Don't worry that the batter is thick, you want that texture as that will make it super fudgy.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees.
Tips for Success with these Easy Boozy Brownies
- Always check what stout that you are using. A lot of chocolate stouts contain lactose which makes them non-vegan. Even if you aren't vegan but are dairy sensitive, it will affect you. I always do thorough research on what stout that I am using and Boatswain Chocolate Stout is made with Cocoa Powder and not actual chocolate.
- The espresso powder in this recipe is important. When you add coffee to chocolate, it enhances the chocolate flavor and makes the brownies that much more rich.
FAQ's
Are these Easy Boozy Brownies Gluten-Free?
These chocolate stout brownies are vegan and dairy-free. They are not gluten-free not only does the recipe contain flour, but beer naturally contains gluten because it is made with wheat.
Are these Easy Boozy Brownies Healthy?
While these brownies are healthier than a traditional brownie because they are completely plant-based, I still consider these brownies to be a fun indulgence. We all have to indulge a little right?
Does the Alcohol Burn Off When Cooking?
According to Idaho State University, many factors impact the final alcohol content of homemade recipes. How long the dish is cooked at the boiling point of alcohol (173 degrees Fahrenheit) is one of the biggest ones. After baking these brownies for 45 minutes, about 30 percent of the alcohol is remaining. Therefore, enjoy these boozy brownies with your adult friends, but maybe give the kids something else.
