What Makes These Heart Shaped Cookies So Great
- Easy Ingredients- Most of the ingredients you will probably already have in your pantry at home!
- Vegan-These cookies are egg and dairy-free which makes them totally plant-based!
- No Chilling Time- The dough is ready to bake immediately and doesn't need any chilling time to rest.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Butter-Flavored Shortening- Instead of using vegan butter in this recipe, I opted for butter-flavored shortening. It is still plant-based and dairy-free but I find that it is more readily available at grocery stores. However, feel free to swap for your favorite vegan or regular butter.
- All-Purpose Flour-Feel free to swap with your favorite gluten-free flour blend if needed.
- Almond Milk-The milk helps to thin out the very thick batter. Use any plant-milk that you like.
- Granulated Sugar- The granulated sugar helps these cookies to become nice and crisp.

Instructions
Step 1: In a small bowl, add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until combined. Set aside
Step 2: Using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the shortening and sugar together on high speed until smooth and creamed. Scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed.
Step 3: Beat in the almond milk and vanilla extract.
Step 4: Slowly add the dry ingredients until just incorporated.
Step 5: Fold in the chocolate chips
Step 6: Transfer to baking sheet. Add all of the chocolate chip cookie dough to a baking sheet. Use a spatula, knife, or your hands to spread the dough into an even layer, covering the entire pan.
Step 7: Bake the pan of cookie dough for 20-22 minutes. It will spread against the edges of the pan and become golden brown on top. Once the cookies are baked and cooled, use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies from the pan.
Hint: Make sure to allow the cookies to cool completely before trying to cut out the hearts. If the cookies are too warm they will crumble.
Variations
- M&M's - Swap the chocolate chips for M&M's for a fun twist
- Sprinkles - Fold in some pink and white sprinkles into the batter to make these cookies festive and fun
- Kid friendly - Use a mini heart cookie cutter to cut out the hearts
How to Make Heart Shaped Cookies without a cookie cutter
There are two different ways to make heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies without using a cookie cutter.
Molding Method
The molding method is great for when you don't have a cookie cutter on hand. The molding method involves molding the cookie dough into heart shapes before baking. To do this, I would recommend chilling the dough for about 30 minutes first. Then, take 1.5-2 Tablespoons of cookie dough and mold it into a heart shape. You will want your heart to be long and skinny so it holds its shape while it bakes and spreads.
Cut Out Chocolate Chip Cookies
The cut-out method involves cutting out the heart shapes with a knife. You will still follow the instructions as noted above, by spreading the cookies onto a baking sheet. Once the cookies are done baking, instead of using a cookie cutter to cut out the shapes, simply use a knife to cut out heart shapes from the dough.
Storage
Store these cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to 4 days. These cookies are also perfect for freezing if you want to make a batch but only cook 1-2 at a time.
To freeze, once you have rolled the cookie balls out, add them to a baking sheet and freeze until frozen. Once frozen, add the cookie dough balls to a gallon-sized bag and date and label. Store for up to 3 months.
To bake from frozen, take 1-2 cookie balls out of the freezer, place them on a baking sheet, and bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Cut the hearts out of the cooked cookie, you may want to use a smaller cookie cutter for this.
Top tips
- You can make the cookie dough and chill it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days if you want to make the dough ahead of time.
- Allow the cookies to cool for about 15 minutes before cutting the hearts out of them. If you cut the hearts out of them while they are still warm, you will end up with a gooey mess.
- For a fun twist, add some festive sprinkles! I got my Valentine's Day sprinkles at Walmart and they are so cute!
FAQ
Yes, there are two other methods for making heart-shaped cookies without a cookie cutter. The molding method and the cutout method.
If you aren't using a cookie cutter, you can cut them with a sharp knife. Make sure to cut them when they are slightly warm so it is easier to make the cuts.
If you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, you can either mold long and skinny hearts with your hands before baking, allowing space for them to spread, or you can cut out hearts with a knife after the dough has baked on the sheet pan.
