This Jackfruit BBQ Party Popper is an amazing appetizer to bring to parties and events! Buttery, flaky, and filled with tangy-sweet, and spicy BBQ Jackfruit, this appetizer will be sure to wow all of your guests!
What is Jackfruit?
Jackfruit is a tropical fruit that is grown in tropical regions of the world and native to South India. Jackfruit has spiky outer skin and is green or yellow. It is the largest of the tree fruits and can grow up to 80lbs! Jackfruit looks like an oblong honeydew melon or a very large mango.
Jackfruit has become a common meat substitute for those who eat meat-free diets. This is in part to the texture of the fruit being dense and fibrous. The jackfruit can be pulled like regular meat which makes it an excellent meat substitute. Jackfruit has a sweet-like taste to it that some say tastes similar to pork when cooked and I agree. When doctored up with BBQ sauce and some caramelized onions, my goodness, this tastes exactly like BBQ! The easiest way to buy jackfruit is canned, I get mine at Trader Joe's but any Asian supermarket should sell it.
How are Jackfruit BBQ Party Poppers made?
This Jackfruit BBQ Party Popper recipe couldn't be easier to make. They have 5 ingredients and take about 35 minutes from start to finish.
TOTAL TIME:
PREPARATION TIME: 15 MINUTES
COOK TIME: 20 MINUTES
TOTAL TIME: 35 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 package frozen puff pastry
- 2 cans jackfruit in brine (drained and shredded)
- 1 Red Onion diced
- 2 cups BBQ Sauce
- 1 tbs Non Dairy Milk
INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE THES JACKFRUIT BBQ PARTY POPPERS:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice the red onion thinly and add to a hot pan with a tablespoon of olive oil. Cook onions until caramelized, about 15 minutes. To get the perfect caramelization, you need to thinly slice the onions and sauté them on medium to low heat for about 15 minutes. Try and leave the onions alone and do not stir the pan frequently. Let those babies sit and simmer, after about ten minutes you will notice them start to brown. At this point, you can stir the pan. Keep the onions in the pan and caramelizing until they are a deep brown color but not burnt. Caramelizing the onions draws out their sweetness and gives them an amazing flavor.
- While the onions are caramelizing, lay out your puff pastry and drain your jackfruit. You are going to want to rinse your jackfruit good to get all the brine off. Once you rinse your jackfruit you should be able to shred it with your hands.
- Once onions are brown and caramelized, add the rinsed jackfruit and BBQ sauce.
- Slice the puff pastry into 12 squares and spoon 1 tbs of the jackfruit filling into each square. Fold each square diagonally and seal. Brush each square with the non-dairy milk.
- Bake for 20 minutes
Tip's for Success:
- Make sure you drain and rinse your jackfruit really good. You want to get as much of the brine off the fruit as you can, the brine is part of what keeps the jackfruit so sweet.
- It is best to use a spicy or smoky BBQ sauce with this recipe. The heat and the smoke will counteract the sweetness of the jackfruit.
Storage:
Store these BBQ Appetizers in an airtight container for up to four days.
Jackfruit BBQ Party Popper FAQ's
Here are some common questions I get regarding these party poppers.
Are These Party Poppers Gluten-Free?
No, these party poppers are not gluten-free. The main ingredient is puff pastry and puff pastry does contain gluten.
Is Puff Pastry Vegan?
Yes! Most Puff Pastry is vegan. Instead of butter, palm oil is used to give it the buttery flaky texture. Palm oil is a controversial ingredient for some but it is technically considered vegan. However, always check your packaging to make sure. I always use the Pepperidge Farm brand as I know for sure that it is vegan.
Are These Appetizers Healthy?
Each popper contains 146 calories, 17.5 grams of carbs and 7.7 grams of fat. These poppers are a lot healthier than making the same recipe with an animal product. One cup of pulled pork is equal to 417 calories vs 157 calories in one cup of jackfruit.
