Why These Philly Cheesesteak Loaded Fries are the Best
- Sheet Pan Meal- Most of this recipe is made on a sheet pan which makes it a super easy cleanup for a busy weeknight.
- Plant-Based- These loaded fries use plant-based ground beef and a vegan "cheez wiz" making this a stealthy-healthy dinner the whole family will enjoy.
- 30 Minute Dinner- This dinner can be made in 30 minutes which means it is perfect for a busy weeknight when you find yourself running all around!
Ingredient Notes
- Plant-Based Beef Crumbles - Since traditional Philly Cheesesteaks are made with thinly sliced beef, to mimic that we are using plant-based beef crumbles. My favorite is Impossible Meat, it tastes frighteningly accurate to real ground beef. However, feel free to use whatever vegan ground beef alternative you have on hand!
- Frozen French Fries- The base of these loaded fries are frozen french fries. Feel free to use any type that you like, I just picked up a bag from my local Trader Joe's.
- Nutritional Yeast- To make the Cheez Whiz, nutritional yeast is key to getting the cheesy flavor that we are looking for. Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast, which means yeast cells are killed during processing and inactive in the final product. It has a nutty, cheesy, and savory flavor. It's a common vegan cheese substitute.
- Vegetables- I topped these Cheesesteak fries with some diced bell pepper, red onion, and mushrooms, traditional toppings on a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, however, feel free to load them up with whatever you want!

Instructions
How to make the "Cheez Wiz"
- Roughly dice the potato and carrot and add them to a small pot with the cashews. Fill with water and bring to a boil.
- Boil on high for 10 minutes.
- Drain and add the mixture to a high-speed blender. Add the almond milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and nutritional yeast and blend until smooth.
How to Assemble the Loaded Philly Cheesesteak Fries
- Spread the frozen french fries on a baking sheet and bake according to the package directions.
- Dice the bell peppers, onion, and mushrooms, and add them to a skillet with the vegan ground beef. Cook until the onion is translucent and the vegan beef is no longer pink
- Top the baked french fries with the cheesesteak mixture
- Top with the "Cheez Wiz"
- Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes
- Serve immediately
Hint: For an easy cleanup, layer down parchment paper under the fries. That way when you are cleaning up, all you need to do is remove the parchment paper and you are good to go!
Substitutions
- Nut-Free - Swap the cashews out for some roasted cauliflower. It will thicken the cheese sauce and keep it nut-free!
- Low-Sodium - Omit the salt to lower the amount of sodium in this recipe.
- Whole-Food Plant-Based - If you are sticking to a WFPB lifestyle, feel free to leave out the vegan ground beef. It is processed so it wouldn't necessarily fit into a WFPB lifestyle, however, this would still be delicious with just mushrooms, peppers, and onions!
Variations
- Spicy - Top with some crushed chili pepper flakes to take the heat up a notch!
- Keto - Make these Philly Cheesesteak fries keto-friendly by swapping the fries for sliced zucchini or by making the fries out of jicama!
- Extra Creamy- Omit the cheese sauce and make these Philly Cheesesteak Fries extra creamy with vegan cream cheese! Just dollop it on top of the fries like you did the cheez wiz and bake as normal.

FAQ's
The topping ideas for these loaded fries are endless! Add some sliced pepperoncinis or some vegan pulled pork made from jackfruit, or even some tomatoes!
If you want to keep it quick, frozen fries work best in this recipe. However, you can make your own fries, make keto fries, or even use zucchini! It doesn't matter what type of frozen french fries that you use but I really enjoy thick cut fries like steak fries or even sometimes waffle fries!
Most often, Philly Cheesesteaks are made with a combination of Cheez Wiz and Provolone. We are making our own vegan cheez wiz out of vegetables for this recipe. However you can top with your favorite vegan cheese.
Equipment
Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. See below for the equipment you will need to make this recipe.
- High Speed Blender
- Non-stick skillet
- Cookie Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- Chef Knife
Storage
Once the fries are cooked and the toppings are added, this dinner should be served immediately to prevent the fries from becoming soggy. However, leftover beef and veggies will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then microwave or warm on the stove until heated through.
Top tips
- Make sure to spread the fries in an even layer so they bake up crispy. The last thing that we want is soggy fries!
- Serve these dirty fries alongside a hearty salad, or vegetable to make this a full meal! We love making a giant salad to pair alongside this dish!
- You can also cook these dirty fries in the air fryer! Add the fries to the air fryer, fry at 400 for 15 minutes, top with the cheesesteak topping and cheez wiz and then air fry for another 5 minutes and serve!
