This Hula Pie is easy and simple to make. A fun recipe to make with family, this Hula Pie will bring back all the memories of Maui beaches. This Hula Pie is a riff off of the pie made famous in Hawaii, but it is plant-based and vegan. This pie will have you jumping for joy!
I was first introduced to Hula Pie by a friend who had just got back from Maui. We were talking about food and my blog and she mentioned that every time she goes to Maui, she loves to eat this pie at one of the restaurants. She recently became plant-based and could no longer enjoy the pie as it is made with ice cream. I set out to make a version of the Hula Pie that is vegan and plant-based so all of us could enjoy it! Let me tell you, this pie is out of this world! My friend tried a bite and she said it tasted just like she remembered!
According to the Duke's website, Hula Pie was developed at Kimo’s which is a restaurant in Maui.
Hula Pie is made with macadamia nut ice cream piled high on a chocolate cookie crust and topped with chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and more macadamia nuts.

Ingredients
The ingredients for this pie are actually pretty basic! You can get most of them at your local grocery store!
- Full Fat Coconut Milk
- Coconut Sugar
- Vegan Butter
- Coconut Cream
- Macadamia Nuts
- Vanilla Bean Paste
- Vegan Chocolate Chunks
- Oreo Cookies
Please see the recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Start by chilling the coconut cream overnight in the fridge, you want a thick, cold cream to whip into ice cream.
Day One: Make the Ice Cream
The next day, using either a stand mixer or a hand mixer, scoop out the coconut cream and beat until stiff peaks form. Slowly fold in the vanilla bean paste, sweetened condensed milk, and chopped macadamia nuts.
Note: You can either buy vegan sweetened condensed milk or make your own. I've tested this recipe both ways. This is a great brand if you want to go the store-bought route. If you want to make your own, you can follow this tutorial here.
Find a bowl where the rim will easily fit inside the pie crust (if using a 9” pie crust, find a bowl where the rim is under 9”) You will be placing the bowl upside down in the crust. Line the bowl with plastic wrap and pour the macadamia nut ice cream into the bowl. Freeze overnight
Day Two: Assemble the Pie
In a food processor, add in the Oreos and 5 tbs of melted vegan butter. Pulse until a rough crumble is formed. Press the crumble into a greased pie pan and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
Take out the frozen ice cream and gently flip it into the oreo pie crust. It should easily come out of the plastic wrap. Look how pretty that dome shape is!
In a small saucepan, melt the chocolate chunks and add 3 tbs of vegan cream. I used plain Nutpods. Once the chocolate fudge sauce is melted, spoon the fudge sauce over the top of the pie. Line the rim of the pie with whipped cream and sprinkle with macadamia nuts.
Substitutions
If you want to make this fit into any diet, follow some of these substitutions!
- Nut-Free - While the core concept of this pie is the macadamia nut ice cream, feel free to sub with vanilla ice cream or something fun like mint chip or coffee!
- Sugar-Free - The sugar in this recipe comes from the Oreos, the sweetened condensed milk, and the chocolate fudge. Pick up some low-sugar chocolate brownie cookies and make your own vegan sweetened condensed milk with spenda and use a bar of sugar-free chocolate for the fudge sauce.
Variations
What to take this recipe on a fun spin? Check out some of these variations below!
- Coffee Flavored - Add in 2 tbs of instant espresso powder to your ice cream mixture to make this a coffee-flavored ice cream!
- Bars - instead of using a pie pan, turn these into fun bars by adding the crust into a 9x11 inch pan and pouring the ice cream on top, and freezing it. Cut it into bars for a fun dessert!
- White Chocolate- Swap out the regular chocolate chips in the fudge sauce for white chocolate to give it a fun spin.

Equipment
Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. I use these mixing bowls and this mixer! I love my new food processor that I got recently and it works great for crumbling up the Oreos!
Storage
Cover with plastic wrap and store this pie in the freezer for up to one month.
Top tip
Set this pie out for about 20 minutes before serving. Coconut Milk Ice Cream freezes harder than dairy ice cream and you will want to let it thaw enough to safely slice it.
